What to wear to a wedding as a guest

Start with the invitation: the venue, the time of day and any dress code tell you most of what you need to know. For a daytime ceremony, crepe and matte chiffon are the safest bets; for an evening do, satin and bold prints come into their own. Whatever the wedding, a good guest dress comes down to three things: a fabric that won’t crease, a cut you can walk and sit in, and a length that suits the venue. These styles work just as well for christenings, garden parties and family celebrations.

Long or short?

A church ceremony or a sit-down dinner calls for a long dress, and they make up around three quarters of this collection. For an outdoor drinks reception or a registry office wedding, a short dress or a jumpsuit is often the better choice. If it’s an all-day affair, look at chiffon A-line styles first: they stay cool and comfortable through hours on your feet.

Wedding guest etiquette: colours to wear and avoid

White and ivory are still reserved for the bride. Our ivory shades are meant for other occasions, or for weddings where the couple has said it’s fine. Black, once off-limits, now works for evening weddings, especially softened with a print or a fabric with a little sheen. Beyond that, soft natural tones such as sage green, terracotta, navy and dusty pink look right at almost any wedding, summer or winter.
