Bridal capes, shawls & stoles

A bridal cape rests on the shoulders and falls down the back, sometimes all the way to the floor; a shawl or stole covers the arms without hiding the dress. All three answer the same question: how to cover bare shoulders without weighing down your look.

Cape, shawl or stole: what’s the difference?

A wedding cape fastens at the neck or shoulders and falls down the back; a long one extends the dress and can even act as a train. A bridal shawl is a generous piece draped over the shoulders and closed at the front. A stole is narrower and longer, worn over the arms or knotted. Three different pieces, for three very different effects.

Which fabric for which season?

Chiffon and tulle stay sheer and won’t keep you warm: they’re statement pieces for a spring or summer wedding. Lace covers more and meets church requirements. For an autumn or winter wedding, choose a bolero or jacket rather than a stole: a chiffon piece won’t keep anyone warm.

A cape over a backless dress

This is the most effective combination in the collection. A long tulle cape covers the back completely during the ceremony, then comes off to reveal a backless dress for the drinks reception. The same goes for strapless dresses, which leave the shoulders completely bare.

Matching the piece to the dress

A lace cape over a lace dress only works if the two patterns are identical: two different laces will clash. Over a dress that’s already detailed, go for plain chiffon. Over a minimalist dress, the cape can carry the pattern.

Where to try these pieces

Our capes, shawls and stoles are available from the partner boutiques that stock our collections, by appointment. Try them on with the dress rather than next to it: it’s the only way to check that the whites match. Find a stockist near you.
