Long dresses for weddings: guest or maid of honour

An evening ceremony, a formal dinner, a château reception: these are the occasions that call for a floor-length dress. As a guest, you’ll choose it for the dinner and the dancing; as maid of honour, it’s almost expected. A long dress changes the way you move, which is why we pay such attention to slits (on 31 of our designs) and trains (on 13). For a full day on your feet, start with chiffon A-line styles, the most comfortable; for a dinner, sheath and mermaid shapes hold their line better.

Maid of honour dresses

The maid of honour is front and centre in the photos and at the bride’s side all day, so the dress needs to be elegant without stealing the spotlight. Avoid white and ivory, and any volume that competes with the wedding dress: A-line and mermaid shapes in chiffon or matte satin strike exactly the right balance. With several maids of honour, two approaches work well: the same design in different colours, or one colour in different styles. Our dresses come in two to five colours, so you can do either.

Fabrics and finishing touches

We have 22 dresses in satin, which holds its shape and catches the light, and 19 in matte, lightweight chiffon that moves with every step. A further 17 feature a floral print, from watercolour to woven jacquard. Draped bodices appear on 45 designs, a waist-defining belt on 18 and lace details on 10.

Open or covered back?

Of these dresses, 29 are backless and 27 have a covered back, and the venue usually decides. A church ceremony means covering your shoulders, at least during the service, so several designs come with a matching cape or stole you can take off later. Civil ceremonies and evening receptions leave you free to choose.

Where to see the dresses

Ellebeline doesn’t sell direct to the public. Our partner boutiques each carry their own selection and see customers by appointment. Find a stockist and call ahead, especially if you’re dressing several maids of honour in the same colour.
